The Beginnings of the Busted Knuckle Garage - Chapter 3

And the joy of working a full service station in an Upstate New York winter.  The way it works is that each attendant was responsible for their own gas island consisting of 3 pumps.  If you have customers, you stay on the island.  Usually with 3-5 cars to wait on.  The Arab oil embargo brought a back-up of cars for a mile or more and given your 4th or 5th hour of cold and wet conditions, we often asked the customer to keep their car running so that we could warm our hands by their exhaust pipe (this may have something to do with my mental state today). Imagine that, exhaust pipe heat.  But nonetheless, good times as a teenager working with car buddies and all the while thinking we were car guy experts. We were dipsticks with ambition. By the time I turned 16 it was time to head for the "big leagues" though; an Exxon station with repair bays.  Y'know....tools, lifts and all the fun stuff within arm's reach.   More to come....
